Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Teaching/Research Foci

Sociocultural anthropology in the Department has a number of foci which address current social problems. The focus on States, Societies and Beliefs concerns the way belief systems-religions, nationalisms, racial ideologies are implicated in state-society relations today. Bodies, Gender, and Sexuality provides insights into the intersection of power and difference in contemporary societies. Political Ecology and Demography examines ecological and political aspects of biotechnology in developing countries as well relationships among population, conflict, and agricultural intensification. Culture and Health considers medical anthropology in the broad sense of investigating the human response to disease, illness and sickness over time and space, and across lines of power and authority.

Interdisciplinary Program in Archaeology

The Interdisciplinary Program merges archaeology emphasizing a humanistic bent with archaeology emphasizing a social science focus. The program was started as a student initiative, and now has become a full-fledged degree program for the A.B. and Masters of American Culture and Masters of Liberal Arts degrees. There is an explicit recognition of need of out reach to the wider community in which we are embedded. One aspect is the listing as the ‘go to’ source when members of the public call the university with questions about possible cultural items found on camp trips, to items purchased in markets or bazaars around the world – what are they, who made them, how old are they, and so on.

Master of Arts in Islamic and Near Eastern Studies

The MA Program is intended for those holding or seeking careers in secondary education, law, business, government, and private agencies whose work touches upon some aspect of the Near East or for individuals planning to pursue a subsequent doctoral program in some aspect of Islamic and Near Eastern Studies.

Division of Infectious Diseases

The Division seeks to achieve the highest patient care, academic, and research standards for in-hospital and outpatient clinical care, clinical management consultation, basic and clinical research, and training of medical students, housestaff, graduate students and postdoctoral infectious disease fellows.

Environmental Studies Program

Environmental issues have achieved a prominent position on the agenda of many political systems in many societies. Today, these issues---and their economic consequences---are shaped by political leaders, interest groups, public opinion, and international concerns that invade both the industrial and the developing worlds. The Environmental Studies Program at Washington University offers students an opportunity to undertake a major or minor in natural sciences or in social sciences associated with the environment. The Program is interdisciplinary; it takes advantage of faculty expertise in Anthropology, Biology, Economics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, History, Political Science, and Engineering.

Center for Mental Health Services Research

The Center for Mental Health Services Research supports research and research development in mental health services. Through local, state, and federal partnerships, the Center's objectives are to: (a) provide theoretical and technical support to faculty researching mental health in human service sectors of care; (b) advance knowledge about clients’ needs for care and barriers to that care; (c) improve knowledge about effective and cost-effective psychosocial interventions; (d) transfer research findings to providers and policy makers; and (e) strengthen social work's ability to contribute to mental health research.
