Ph.D.
Minor and Graduate Certificate The interdisciplinary program includes a broad range of disciplines in which students at the graduate and undergraduate levels may develop their study of Africa. The African Studies Program does not itself grant graduate degrees. Graduate students interested in Africa may earn a Ph.D. minor in African Studies or a certificate in African Studies while specializing in another department such as anthropology. Ph.D.
Minor in Latin American, Caribbean Students who are candidates for the Ph.D. degree in other departments may obtain a minor in Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies (LACIS) by taking a minimum of 12 credits, including two semesters of seminar, in courses related to Latin America, Spain or Portugal. Outreach activities constitute a major focus of the LACIS program. Ph.D. Minor and Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies The Women's Studies Program mission is to expand our understanding and appreciation of women's lives and experiences both historically and in contemporary societies.Although the program does not offer any graduate degrees in women's studies, graduate students can pursue a Ph.D. minor in women's studies. Also, any student (including Special students, graduate students, law students, and so on) is eligible to earn the certificate in women's studies. An active outreach program links the Women's Studies Program with wider communities of women and makes women's studies expertise available to activists, professionals and policy-makers. The Folklore Program's approach is comparative and interdisciplinary, with a concern for performance, ethnography, archiving, and responsible public presentation of folklore through exhibits, festivals, media productions, and other modes of representation. Offerings in American folklore, including American Indian Folklore, place a special emphasis on the surrounding region. While a graduate degree in folklore is not offered to graduate students, graduate students in other departments such as anthropology may pursue an Option A Ph.D. minor in folklore or develop an Option B Ph.D. minor with coursework in folklore and at least one other department outside the major. Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach Included in the Center's mission is the goal of fostering new knowledge and understanding of Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia as well as serving as a community resource through outreach activities designed for Wisconsin's citizens, businesses and other parties interested in these regions of the world. A Day in East Europe, for example, is a free one-day program that introduces high school students to the cultures and languages of Eastern Europe through mini-lectures, presentations, and performances conducted by UW-Madison Faculty and students. The Program coordinates
teaching and research on Africa at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Formally established in 1962 and one of the earliest such programs
in the
country, it has trained Africa specialists in a variety of fields.
The African Studies Program has also pioneered in the field of
African outreach programs in Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. In
an effort to assist educators and communities interested in extending
knowledge about Africa,
the African Studies Program offers curriculum specialists for schools,
workshops for educators, and a speakers bureau. Center for Southeast Asian Studes The Center operates a vigorous and well-developed program committed to the study of Southeast Asia which includes faculty members in 15 disciplines including anthropology. The Center sponsors a K-12 workshop for teachers, the one in 2004 was entitled "Historical Legacies: Defining Culture in South and Southeast Asia." A PhD minor in Southeast Asian Studies is also offered to students who are interested in the study of Southeast Asia as is a graduate certificate. Established in 1961, the Center supports extensive teaching, research, academic study and outreach relating to the countries of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Tibet and, to a lesser extent, the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The Center provides access to resources for teaching about South Asia at the K-12, secondary, and post-secondary level, and to the community at large. It also assists teachers and community leaders in designing programs on a number of aspects of the arts, civilizations, culture, geography, history, and languages of the countries listed above. Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies The mission of the Institute is to promote an understanding of the environment and to define and solve environmental problems and issues through leadership in interdisciplinary instruction, research, and outreach at all levels, from campus to global. Among its outreach activities are: 1) Earthwatch Radio (a series of two-minute reports on science, policy, and the environment which is the nation's longest-running radio program on the environment and can be heard on more than 150 stations in the United States and Canada), and 2) Water Resources Management Workshops (in which graduate students in the Water Resources Management Program prepare comprehensive plans to protect and improve water quality, recreational opportunities, and other public benefits in communities throughout Wisconsin).
