Business and Organizational Anthropology Program

The program seeks to (1) create a unique 21st century curriculum in Business and Organizational Anthropology that prepares students for anthropological careers in business, industry, government and public sector organizations with a focus on the cultural dimensions of global business and industrial environments as well as (2) provide students with strong theoretical, methodological and ethical foundation to tackle cultural issues in work practices, occupational communities, consumer behavior and multinational organization in the global business context.

Medical Anthropology Program

The Applied Medical Anthropology Program gives students opportunities to have hands-on experience conducting research in health care settings. It is strong in life course studies, gerontology, HIV/AIDS disease, disability studies, health care organizations, ethnicity and health, urban health, women's health, mental health, medical technology and death and dying. A joint Ph.D. program exists between medical and business anthropology that allows students to specialize in the organization of health institutions and systems.

Physical Anthropology

Forensic anthropology is a strength within the physical anthropology program. The program director maintains consulting relationships with local and state medico-legal agencies, including the Michigan State Police, the city of Detroit and the city of Windsor, Canada. Strong linkages exist to the Medical Anthropology Program, the Department of Criminal Justice, the School of Medicine's Department of Internal Medicine (Rheumatology Division) and Biomedical Engineering.

Museum of Anthropology

The purpose of the WSU Museum of Anthropology is to inspire a broader understanding and appreciation of the ethnic diversity and cultural heritage of our region by placing it within a global context. The central mission of the Museum is to train and actively involve University students in the activities of preservation, research, interpretation, and exhibition of material culture for the benefit and enrichment of the local community.

Institute for Information Technology and Culture

The Institute was created in 2001 by Wayne State University to conduct research into how corporations, governments, educational institutions, and communities can use information technology more effectively. Our research focuses on: Culture, access, and equity in the technological world, the cultural challenges to e-learning, the role of information technology in promoting safety and security, medical informatics and improving healthcare, and the use of technology for organizational improved organizational performance and learning. Our projects in these areas have resulted in improved productivity and effectiveness for more than twenty corporations and state and federal agencies.

Center for the Study of Citizenship

The Center promotes research and intellectual exchange about citizenship among a global community of scholars, students, practitioners, and the general public. The mission of the center is to: (1) foster research in the emerging interdisciplinary field of citizenship studies locally, nationally, and internationally; (2) eEstablish a forum for discussing citizenship in its many aspects; and (3) provide a broad intellectual foundation for discussing public policies related to citizenship in the United States and in the world.
