G. Woodson Institute for The Institute includes the Center for the Study of Local Knowledge which is dedicated to promoting new and innovative research on a community’s shared understanding of its cultural, economic, political, and social relations, across space and time. It fosters mutually beneficial partnerships by creating new venues for intellectual exchange and collaboration between academic and lay scholars. The Institute's Proffit Historic District Online Resource Archive is designed to provide easy access to a variety of research tools for teachers, researchers, and community members interested in learning about the town of Proffit and its history. Center for South Asian Studies The Center is an interdisciplinary center that coordinates and promotes the study of South Asia- its diverse peoples, languages, cultures, religions and history. Coordinating academic studies, outreach programs, and research relating to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet, the Center offers a wide range of courses in South Asia's languages and the disciplines, a comprehensive library, and substantial fellowship support as well as educational and cultural programs in the community. Kevin Barry Perdue Archive of Tradional Culture This folklore archive emphasizes the collection of traditional music that is preserved and made available to the general public. The Ruth McNeil Folksong Collection involves folksongs and ballads collected during the 1940s from the general area of Staunton, Va. The Virginia Folklore Society Recordings, done in the 1930s, involved 363 folksongs from 67 traditional singers. Children
of Abraham Institute The Children of Abraham Institute ("CHAI") is dedicated to bringing indigenous religious interests back on the map as essential components of peace negotiations between peoples with a history of intense religiosity. The Institute focuses specifically on the three Abrahamic Religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - and on the conflicts that divide peoples who otherwise share allegiance to the same God. The most urgent of these conflicts are, of course, violent ones, but CHAI also focuses on non-violent but socially significant political disagreements among religious groups.
