Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Museum Studies Graduate Certificate

The goal of the program is to provide, in a museum environment, the basic scholarship and functional training to equip the student with the skills necessary to assume professional entry-level museum positions in museums, galleries, archives, historical societies, and related institutions. The program is listed and administered through the Anthropology Department at UW-Milwaukee and taught off-campus at the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) by museum professionals. Graduates of the program have assumed responsibilities in museums and related institutions across the country as directors, curators, collections managers, registrars, and educators.

Library and Information Science

The purpose of the MLIS program is to prepare librarians and information professionals who are able to manage change in an urbanized, technologically oriented, and knowledge-based society. A Master of Science in Anthropology/Master of Library and Information Science prepares students for positions as curators of museum libraries and as information specialists and researchers for local history collections and state historical societies

Certificate in Urban Geographic Information Systems

The Certificate is designed to provide a formal program of studies for students who wish to pursue careers in geographic information systems in local government. Students wishing to earn the Certificate must be enrolled in another master's degree program such as anthropology. The Certificate is for individuals seeking careers as GIS specialists, providing geographic data management, spatial analysis, and GIS system management support to professionals in a broad range of disciplines, such as criminal justice, health services, city and regional planning, civil and environmental engineering, transportation, and marketing.

Historic Resources Management Services

Housed in the Anthropology Department's Archaeological Research Laboratory, Historic Resources Management Services provides comprehensive cultural resource management (CRM) services to private, state, and federal clients. The program has provided high quality CRM consulting services for more than 25 years.

Program in Midwestern Archaeology

Also housed in the Department's Archaeological Research Laboratory, the Midwestern Archaeology Program has among its goals: 1) engaging the community with multiple levels of interaction through acting as the Region 9 Office for the Wisconsin Historical Society and thereby maintain a partnership between UWM, state and local governments, and other institutions such as the Milwaukee Public Museum. 2) Outreach programs for the general public (including many activities from school room lectures and demonstrations at Milwaukee Public Schools and other districts, to public speaking engagements at local historic societies, to adult and precollege field school excavations at Trimborn Farm, an historic site in Greendale).

Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

The Center develops, supports and promotes teaching, research and outreach about Latin America and the Caribbean. Services and resources are available to UWM faculty, staff and students; K-12 teachers and post-secondary educators; professional groups; and the community. In addition to educational outreach, CLACS links campus and community through its public programming, including the annual spring Latin American Film Series, and via the Community Outreach Small Grants program.
