Specialization in Forensic Anthropology Forensic Anthropology is offered as a specialization within Biological Anthropology. In accordance with the aims and goals of forensic anthropology, the focus of our program is the application of skeletal biological techniques to the identification of decomposing and skeletal remains for law enforcement and medicolegal agencies and investigations. The basic aims and goals of the Forensic Anthropology Center are summed up in the following definition of forensic anthropology, as defined by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology: "Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology to the legal process." Human identification services have now been provided through the State Medical Examiner System for the District Attorney General's Office, arson investigators, and various state, local, and national law enforcement agencies and county medical examiners for almost thirty years. The Archaeological Research Laboratory The Archaeological Research Laboratory (ARL) is a research, cultural resource assessment, and consulting unit dedicated to the conduct of high quality and timely work for government agencies and private entities while providing a practical institutional mechanism for student experiential learning and continuing education. In combination with the University's Frank H. McClung Museum and the University community, the ARL can offer an impressive set of research services. The faculty and staff of the laboratory assist the Department of Anthropology's mission and programs by providing: (1) experiential training and formal learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the public practice of archaeology; (2) technical assistance, educational media and professional development opportunities to practicing archaeologists; and (3) programs designed to translate the products of archaeological research for public education and recreation.
