Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Graduate Track in Activist Anthropology

The program builds on the best of a long tradition of the creative combination of scholarship and social activism within anthropology, while at the same time encouraging critical reflection on both the conceptual and practical limitations of that inherited tradition. Activist anthropology is predicated on the idea that we need not choose between first rate scholarship, on the one hand, and carefully considered political engagement, on the other. Activist research can enhance the empirical breadth and the theoretical sophistication--as well as the practical usefulness of the knowledge that we produce as anthropologists.  The program brings the activist anthropology track “home” in a dual sense: opening space for alternative forms of anthropological training within the department and university, and encouraging activist research on U.S. society, challenging the deeply seated dichotomy between “over there” (where political engagement happens) and “here” where more conservative premises often prevail.

Mexican-American Borderlands Graduate Program

The Anthropology Department offers a graduate level thematic concentration on Mexican Americans which includes: (1) Indigenous Heritage - the indigenous heritage of the Mexican Americans in Mexico and the U.S. Southwest; (2) Mexican History and Culture - the history and culture of Mexican Americans on both sides of the United States-Mexico border; Mexican American Culture - contemporary issues dealing with race, ethnicity, folklore, education, family, gender, immigrants, and political economy; (4) The United States-Mexico Border - historical and contemporary themes dealing with culture, immigration, and economics.

The African Diaspora Graduate Program

The Graduate Program, established in 1992 with the collaboration of the Center for African and African American Studies, employs the theories and methods of anthropology in comparative research on African-descended communities. While recognizing the global nature of the African Diaspora, research is primarily concentrated in North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. Courses focus on transnational socioeconomic and cultural patterns, particularly as they relate to the legacies of slavery and the establishment of contemporary social and cultural formations.

Graduate Concentration in Folklore and Public Culture

UT Austin's Department of Anthropology is the only anthropology program in the country that offers a graduate specialization in Folklore and Cultural Studies. The overall program is flexible, allowing each student to develop scholarly depth and breadth in historical, geographic, and cultural areas, as well as in genres, styles, theories, and methods germane to original research in the field.  Recent course offerings include: American Popular Culture, The Practice of Everyday Life, and Anthropology of the Performing Arts.

Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach

Center for African and African American Studies

Through its engagement with Africa and the African Diaspora, the CAAAS seeks to establish an activist intellectual community that considers the processes of race, gender, power and culture operating within and upon Black communities. Faculty and students affiliated with the CAAAS focus on four principal areas: Africa, The African Diaspora, Blacks in the U.S., and Expressive Culture, Cultural Politics and Representation. The Center is invested in community activism and media representatives, and has established an alliance with Huston-Tilotson, The historically Black University in Austin and participates in high school mentoring programs.

Center for Mexican-American Studies

Since its creation in 1970, CMAS has worked to enhance understanding of the Mexican and Mexican American experience, as well as the broader Latino experience, and to strengthen the presence of Mexican Americans and other Latinos in the intellectual terrain, both within and beyond US borders. The Center has built partnerships with business and community based organizations to promote Latino financial literacy and research on Latino wealth and asset accumulation through a year-long program of study and internship.

South Asia Institute

The Institute's mission is to enhance South Asian programs, especially those pertaining to contemporary issues. The Institute provides Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships funded by the U.S. Department of Education relating to South Asia. The Institute also possesses outreach programs to K-12 schools, post-secondary institutions, business and civic organizations, and the Texas community at large. A central mission of the Institute is to promote the study of South Asian languages. It currently teaches Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil and Urdu.

Center for Middle Eastern Studies

The Center includes Arabic studies, Hebrew studies, Islamic studies, Jewish studies, Middle Eastern studies, Persian studies, and Turkish studies.  It has been involved in outreach work to schools, colleges, community groups, business, and the media since the mid-1970s. The Outreach Program maintains a library of materials specifically for use by K-12 educators in their classrooms, for example. It also maintains a speakers bureau of staff, graduate students, and faculty members who are willing to come to speak to schools, community groups, workshops, and events about the Middle East and related topics. In addition, it periodically run workshops for teachers.

Texas Archeological Research Laboratory

TARL's mission is to collect, preserve, and curate archeological specimens and records, train students, conduct archeological research, and disseminate information. Throughout TARL's history, the bulk of its research projects has been done under contract with state and federal agencies. It is the largest archeological repository and curation facility in Texas.

Environmental Science Institute

This is a multi-disciplinary institute for basic scientific research in environmental studies. There is heightened awareness of the numerous environmental problems facing the State of Texas and the Texas-Mexico borderlands. These include the contamination and depletion of water supplies, contamination of the atmosphere and the encroachment of non-native species, all in the face of one of the most rapidly growing populations in the country. The Institute has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to partner graduate students in the sciences with K-12 teachers in Texas to enhance science education through new classroom activities, workshops and field projects. The program emphasizes collaboration in K-12 classrooms and in field projects on Texas watersheds, estuaries and ocean-going vessels.

Center for Social Work Research

The Center for Social Work Research strives to build knowledge about the human condition, social issues, and service delivery systems in order to enhance learning and practice as well as promote social welfare and social justice. The Center conducts research for non-university agencies across a range of social concerns including child welfare, domestic and community violence, and substance abuse.  For example, its Community-Based Family Resource and Support Project is a federally funded assessment of Texas' efforts to develop, operate, expand, and enhance a network of community-based, prevention-focused, family resource and support programs against child abuse.
