Data
on Anthropologically Connected
The basic assumptions
of Human Evolutionary Ecology (HEE) are derived from the field
of evolutionary behavioral ecology, developed in biology but increasingly
employed in the social and biological sciences. The program is
designed to produce scholars who contribute both to the basic explanation
of human and non-human primate behavioral variation and to the
understanding of contemporary population problems such as conservation
of the environment, aging, the demographic and epidemiological
transitions, divorce and child support, parental investment and
disinvestment, teen pregnancy, sex differences in mortality, social
display, and conflict and warfare. Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies A museum studies program with a strong Native American component is currently being developed with support from Educational Foundation of America, a private foundation. With the increase of tribal museums and culture centers throughout the United States and Canada there is a need to provide educational and training programs for this new cadre of museum professionals. The Ortiz Center provides a gathering place where members of the academic community meet with their counterparts from diverse communities and cultures beyond the academy for mutual study, debate, and cultural expression and exchange. The center’s collaborative public programs—such as films, colloquia, exhibits, performances, and conversation—encourage new forms of teaching, research, and shared ideas among the students, staff, and faculty of the university and people who typically have remained outside the academy: independent scholars, elders, artists, teachers, healers, musicians, thinkers, storytellers, and other recognized holders of traditional and community wisdom. Latin American and Iberian Institute The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) administers UNM's interdisciplinary programs in Latin American Studies and supports the university's Latin American and Iberian activities in all of UNM's eleven schools and colleges. LAII's Center for Latin American Resources and Outreach (CLARO) has an active K-12 teacher outreach program to support teachers as they expand students' awareness and understanding of Latin America. CLARO offers teacher in-service training workshops, a lending library of curriculam materials about Latin America, and a speakers bureau for expert presentations. CLARO focuses primarily on elementary through middle school education outreach. Southwest Hispanic Research Institute The Institute has conducted a long list of successful activities, including initiating and coordinating the development of interdisciplinary research projects by University faculty who specialize in Southwestern and Hispanic studies; sponsoring lecture series, symposia, research competitions, colloquia, and conferences on timely issues critical to the growing Hispanic regional population; and disseminating research and other project outcomes by way of working papers, monographs, public exhibitions, and video documentaries. Since 1973, OCA has completed over 800 cultural resources management projects, and has established a strong track record in diverse research, educational and publication programs. Highlights of this history include: archeological research designs, surveys, testing programs, data recovery plans, and excavations; Section 106 compliance coordination, HABS/HAER documentation, State and National Register nominations, ethnological and TCP studies, NAGPRA consultations, archival research, popular publications, posters, and brochures.
