on Anthropologically Connected
Program in Medical Anthropology The overall purpose of the program is to create a curriculum structure that will offer our students solid anthropological training, coupled with extensive preparation in behavioral and health science -- especially the training and research resources that exist in the Departments of Epidemiology, Health Education, and Social and Administrative Medicine at UNC.. The graduate program is designed to offer special training for the variety of students preparing for careers as medical anthropologists. M.A. in Anthropology for Health Professionals This special curriculum is designed to provide an opportunity for people in Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and other health professions to combine that training with a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology. Center for Integrating Research and Action The mission of CIRA is to promote social change leading to the existence of just and sustainable communities and institutions and to the expansion of participatory democracy. This will be achieved through the design, planning and implementation of strategies to integrate the work of researchers with the actions of communities to achieve positive social change. CIRA will facilitate interaction, communication and collaboration among and between university and community-based researchers and community organizations to support collaborative research/action projects. It is envisioned that these collaborations will result in valuable learning and action that will increase the capacity and vision of both community stakeholders and researchers in the social sciences, humanities, and relevant professional fields such as law and education. CIRA seeks to support the success of these collaborations, to be a rigorous and valuable contributor to academic and public debates, and to contribute to the development of research/action traditions. Social Movements Working Group The central goal of the Social Movements Working Group (SMWG) is to provide a forum for scholars in the social sciences, humanities, and professional schools to engage with critical debates about the role of contemporary social movements in the transformation of public life, broadly speaking. By "public life" in this context we understand the ensemble of cultural, social, economic, and political processes that define worldviews and practices of world-making. Our group seeks to contribute to interdisciplinary dialogue around, and arising from, social movements of various kinds. Research Laboratories of Archaeology The laboratories mission has four facets: (1) to expand knowledge of native peoples in the Americas, with particular emphasis on North Carolina and the South; (2) to train graduate and undergraduate students in the methods of archaeology; (3) to inform the public about Indian culture and archaeology; and (4) to serve as a repository of archaeological collections. As part of its public service, the laboratory participates in Project Archaeology,a national educational program designed to give America's young citizens a greater appreciation for our nation's cultural heritage and particularly for its ancient past. Its primary component is a series of classroom lessons for grades 4-8, which have been prepared by professional educators and archaeologists and tailored to the curriculum in each state. Center for the Study of the American South The mission of the Center is to extend the historic role of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the world's premier institution for research, teaching, and public dialogue on the history, culture, and contemporary experience of the American South. The Center is the University's primary vehicle to promote initiatives in this tradition of regional service and scholarship. Institute of Latin American Studies The Institute's main functions are: (1) to encourage and stimulate study and research on Latin America at UNC-Chapel Hill; (2) to serve as a campus hub for interdisciplinary communication on Latin America, including the sponsorship of a wide variety of activities that bring together interested faculty and students from a large number of academic disciplines; and (3) to promote the exchange of scholars and students, and to encourage close collaborative relationships between the University and institutions of higher learning in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. The outreach component of the program includes activities regarding public schools, post-secondary education, Annual Latin American Film Festival, business and media, lending library, Day of the Dead Exhibit, and the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs.
