The European Field Studies Program supports anthropological study of Europeby providing graduate and Honors undergraduate students with classroom instruction, a discussion forum, and a supervised field training experience in Europe. UMass students have conducted fieldwork on festivals in the Azores, Northern Ireland's marching season, radio journalism in Bratislava, folklore and Archaeology in the outer Hebrides, immigrations and emigrations in Istanbul, women's issues in East Germany, collective farms in Romania, ethnicity in the Trentino, tourism in Basque area.tunity to link theory and practice (or academic and real world experience). UMass Alliance for UACT is a unique partnership of UMass students, faculty and members of grassroots community organizations. They work together to design programs that build community, promote social and economic justice, advance cross-cultural understanding and serve the educational and civic objectives of our Land Grant University. It strives to engage in work that transforms classrooms, institutions, communities and its participants by rejecting the constraints of the conventional classroom and by making the roles played as students, teachers, citizens and activists more seamless. American, Caribbean, & Latino Studies The Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies offers an interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies in conjunction with a disciplinary master's or doctoral degree program. Overseen by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies Executive Committee, it is intended to certify competency in area and language studies. An opportunity for graduate students to pursue interdisciplinary studies, the Graduate Certificate contributes to training in internationalism, multi-culturalism, and foreign language competence. Center for Public Policy and Administration The Center engages in scholarly and applied research affecting regional, national and global challenges, facilitates ongoing exchange among policymakers, scholars, and citizens, while offering innovative teaching and applied learning opportunities to students. An ever-widening circle of community residents, government decision-makers, non-profit leaders, and local officials are finding CPPA to be an accessible resource for relevant research and analysis. Areas of research include: Education Policy, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy, Family, Gender and Social Policy, Health Policy, Housing and Urban Policy, International and Comparative Policy, Law and Dispute Resolution, and Politics and Governance. Forensic Anthropology Services Forensic Anthropological Services in the Department of Anthropology is a fee-based unit that provides the State Medical Examiner's Office and law enforcement agencies with the expertise they require in the identification of human remains. Archaeological Services is an archaeological consulting service within the anthropology department, specializing in all phases of cultural resource management projects. Its specialties include archaeological and historical background research and field testing, site examination, and data recovery for historic and prehistoric sites. During the last two decades, Archaeological Services has completed more than 300 research projects throughout Massachusetts, the other New England states, and in New York. The Museum has collections of fish, dry skeletal materials, herbs, invertebrates, and mammals. It also has a collection of vascular plants in the Holyoke range as well as a collection of botanical specimens from the Deerfield area. Historic Deerfield, Massachusetts Historic Deerfield is a museum of New England history and art within the carefully preserved 330 year old western Massachusetts village of Deerfield. Each year thousands of visitors come to Deerfield to see a collection of 18th and 19th century houses and the Flynt Center of Early New England Life filled with some of the great decorative arts treasures of early America. The Anthropology Department conducts cooperative projects with the museum.
