Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program The mission of the ITARP, a joint program of the University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Transportation, is to assist the Department in the preservation and protection of Illinois' historic and archaeological resources, to carryout research activities that enhance the educational and public service mission of the University of Illinois, and to promote and ensure the professional and public dissemination of information about the prehistory and history of Illinois. Included within ITARP is the Statewide Survey Division that conducts statewide cultural resource inventories. Public Service Archaeology Program The Public Service Archaeology Program is a full-service cultural resource management and research program. Among its goals is to provide public service to federal, state, and local governmental agencies as well as private organizations and individuals. Public service activities range from helping organizations fulfill legal requirements concerning the identification and evaluation of cultural resources to the dissemination of information through publications and presentations. Thematic Clusters Within SocioCultural Anthropology Though not organized into an official program, the Department possesses a number of "thematic clusters" around which faculty teaching and research formally cohere that focus on issues reaching beyond the University and the academy. Among these are: Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Transnationalism (involving the processes of ethnic and national identity construction as well as migrant and diasporic communities); Race and Racialization (which examines the processes by which race is socially created, imposed and contested); and Work, Class, and Culture (regarding the organization of work and its articulation to cultural practices as well as local and national politics). This MD/PhD program is committed to preparing a diverse cadre of academic Physician-Scholars to confront the multi-dimensional problems and issues that face medicine. The Program has over 160 MD/JD and MD/PhD students pursuing graduate study in over 35 academic disciplines, including anthropology. With such diverse student perspectives, the Program provides a unique environment for students to pursue their passion for combining cutting edge research with individualized high quality clinical training. The Center has an outstanding Africana library collection, a wide range of course offerings, including regular instruction in six African languages, and an interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree program. . The Center provides programs for the community, and offers training and resources for K-12 teachers, community colleges, the business community, and the media. Included in the Outreach Program are: a) teacher curricula workshops and institutes, b) a cultural computer literacy program for senior citizens, c) a regular radio program on Africa and other international issues, d) workshops for the business community, e) Group Abroad Seminars with community colleges, f) a curriculum series for schools, and g) Through the African Lens: an African film series. Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies The Center organizes academic conferences and seminars, administers overseas exchanges for faculty and students, and has an active outreach program that focus on East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its outreach program provides various forms of services to help instructors in educational institutions from elementary schools to colleges in teaching about Asia. These include training workshops on Asia, a summer workshop on China for secondary school teachers, participation in teacher-training sessions at national professional educational meetings, and development of curriculum units on Asia for use in social studies. In addition, the Center has established the Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) which provides an annotated, searchable database of audio-visual media materials on Asia on a Web site as well as a free phone service to answer queries and a video collection on Asia. Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies The Center brings together faculty and students who have a common interest in Latin America and the Caribbean and promotes the presentation of their work in art, literature, music, and scholarly research to the larger community through exhibits, performances, and lectures. The Center also sponsors conferences, symposia, colloquia, and outreach activities on current affairs and other matters of scholarly and general interest. Included in its outreach activities are a) the publication of a quarterly resource guide for educators, b) the publication of curriculum development workbooks (such as "Columbus: Beyond the Myth" and "The Latina/o Experience in the United States"), and c) the maintenance of links to web based curriculum-related materials as a means of facilitating access to curriculum resources. Russian and East European Center The Center serves as an intellectual and institutional center for members of the university community and the public interested in Eastern Europe, Russia, and the newly independent states of Eurasia. Devoted to promoting and disseminating knowledge about the region, the Center supports undergraduate and postgraduate training programs and seeks to foster a lively intellectual life through conferences, lectures, colloquia, visiting scholars, faculty and graduate student seminars and study groups, exhibits, films, and social activities. Among its resources for K-12 education are: a) the International Summer Institute on "World Governments and Politics, b) a Summer Curriculum Development Workshop on Russia, c) an Annotated Bibliography: Teaching Materials on Russia, Eurasia, & Eastern Europe, and d) a Multimedia Library. The Museum holds approximately 47,000 artifacts from diverse cultures and varied historical periods and offers of range of public exhibits relating to them. Its most significant collections include a superb cast of the Parthenon frieze, an extensive collection of Meroviginian Bronzes, nearly 2000 cuneiform tablets dating back to the third millennium BCE, a world-renown collection of Canelos Quechua ceramics, a seminal collection of Plains Indian cultural materials, and the largest collection of Amazonian bark cloth in the United States. As part of its outreach programs it offers K-12 classroom programs such as: Stories Around the World, Oral Traditions Around the World: Trickster Tales, Medieval Craftspeople, Create Your Own Museum, and Museum Problems in Today's World: Exhibit Creation.
