Graduate Study in Biological Anthropology (Forensic) Students can specialize in various areas of biological anthropology, including forensics, genetics, and medical anthropology. Students specializing in forensic anthropology get hands-on training in forensic case studies, and have unique opportunities to study skeletal trauma and pathology. The forensic specialty is associated with the C. A. Pound Laboratory. C. A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory Work at the Laboratory Lab includes the identification of human remains as well as analysis of skeletal trauma and pathology. Although most of the cases received at the laboratory originate from law enforcement agencies and medical examiners within the State of Florida, laboratory personnel, including graduate students, have been involved in numerous cases of national and international interest. The Laboratory is part of the Maples Center for Forensic Medicine (see below). Tropical Conservation and Development Program The Program seeks to advance biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and the welfare of rural people in the tropics through interdisciplinary graduate education, research, and collaborative learning and practice. Its three main goals are: a) to train conservation and development professionals to implement innovative policies that balance conservation with sustainable livelihood improvement, b) to promote interdisciplinary research that integrates biological conservation and sustainable rural development in the tropics, and c) to strengthen and expand a learning network with organizations in Latin America and elsewhere that have compatible goals. The faculties of the College of Law and the Department of Anthropology have approved a joint degree program involving both a Juris Doctor degree, awarded by the College of Law, and a masters or doctoral degree in anthropology, awarded by the Department of Anthropology. Under the joint degree program, students can obtain both degrees in less time than it would take to obtain the degrees if pursued independently. As demonstrated by research, publications, and institutional participation, gender is a critical variable in the analysis of development processes at both the micro and macro levels. Today, government and non-government institutions are paying increasing attention to the role of gender in development. Among the courses offered in the Certificate are: Women and Development, International Development and Gender Issues, Economic Analysis in Small Farm Livelihood Systems, Agriculture’s Role in Latin America and Africa, and Anthropology and Development. Land Use and Environmental Change Institute The Institute is a multidisciplinary research center, developed cooperatively by the Departments of Geological Sciences, Geography, Anthropology, and the Center for Latin American Studies. It promotes basic and applied studies of environmental changes associated with natural phenomena (e.g. climate shifts, volcanic eruptions, fire) and human activities (e.g. deforestation, soil erosion, lake eutrophication, pollution, introduction of exotic biota). It also fosters the development of courses addressing complex interactions among climate, humans, and the environment, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The Center utilizes its extensive expertise in the forensic sciences available at the University of Florida, in the State University System (SUS), and in local, state, and federal agencies to provide comprehensive services which relate to medico-legal death investigation. The Center has the responsibility to maintain laboratories for diagnostic anthropology and toxicology for the examination and diagnosis of forensic cases for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, medical examiners, and attorneys. The Center also offers short courses in a given specialty of forensic disciplines to practitioners outside the University. Among the Center's goals are to to a) promote interdisciplinary research that produces new knowledge about Latin America and the Caribbean, b) support faculty and student exchanges between the University of Florida and institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, and c) conduct outreach activities to the public and to educational institutions across the state. The program sponsors outreach activities that address the needs of both educators and business groups. Among these are: Focus Workshops for K-12 teachers and community college instructors; In-Service Workshops for teachers in cooperation with school districts and parent/teacher organizations; and Business Colloquium that host colloquium focusing on Latin American trade and economic issues of concern to North American businesses. The Center directs, develops, and coordinates interdisciplinary instruction, research, and outreach on Africa. Its Outreach Program includes a variety of activities whose objective is to improve the teaching of Africa in primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and local communities. Among these are: a) K-12 Teachers' Workshops, b) Summer Institutes for K-12 teachers, c) Publication of "Lesson Plans on African History and Geography," and d) Community and School Presentations by faculty and graduate students to local communities and schools. The Program includes a major and a minor as well as outreach activities. Among the outreach activities are an Asian Film Series as well as a Teaching Seminar open to middle and high school teachers engaged or interested in incorporating Asia into their curriculum. Center for Gerontological Studies The Center brings faculty and students together to promote and engage in a variety of education, research, and outreach activities in the state of Florida and beyond, revolving around the study of elders. The Center seeks to ensure that today’s students will be prepared to meet society’s needs in the coming decades for professionals and citizens who can inform public policy regarding the needs of older adults. By January 2004, the Center plans to offer a Graduate Certificate in Geriatric Care Management to enhance the ability of health and social service professionals to manage the care of the elderly in a variety of settings, including the home.
