on Anthropologically Connected
The
Anthropology of Modern Society The Anthropology of Modern Society is a project of graduate training and research dedicated to the study of modernity and its counterpoints in the late twentieth century. The group sees the social life of cities as making manifest this problem in issues of citizenship and democracy, social formations in tension with the nation-state, modern subjectivities, social and religious movements, transnational markets and migrations, and relations of local to global processes. Participants are committed to reorienting anthropological theory and ethnographic practice towards such contemporary social and political problems. Human Experience in Complex Societies Students learn approaches for understanding persons, self, and experience in relation to the cultural processes and social formations that characterize complex societies. Self and its experience are studied in relation to social stratification, ethnicity, the effects of literacy, media, and education, ideologies of identity, encounters with other cultural traditions, the formation of dissenting social, religious, and political groups, among others features of complex societies. Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies The Center offers a unique combination of resources focused on Latin America, including the Center for U.S. Mexican Studies, the deliberate integration of teaching, research, and policy analysis, and the active collaboration with colleagues, students, and leaders from Latin America. Its outreach programs are focused on developing or enhancing a curriculum for K-12 students. Particularly noteworthy are: The Institute of the Americas that is launching a series of analytical studies on questions of particular interest to business communities and The San Diego Dialogue which commissions work on development issues around and across the U.S.-Mexican border, with special emphasis on linkages between San Diego and Tijuana. Center for Environmental Research and Training The Center coordinates the broad range of environmental research activities across the university including the Departments of Anthropology and Economics, the Division of Biological Sciences, the School of Medicine, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It addresses environmental issues across traditional disciplinary boundaries. CERT provides an interface for interaction with environmental agencies outside the university, including the environmental technology sector and governmental agencies.
