Brief Elaborations of Faculty Statements Regarding Significant Accomplishments In Public Outreach
Alston Thoms Since 2000, I've been Texas' Representative for the Society of American Archaeology’s Government Affairs Network (http://www.saa.org/goverment/index.html) and have served the Society in consultations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about Native American concerns over archaeological studies of human remains and funerary objects. I am an Honorary Director of the Land Heritage Institute Foundation, which is developing a 1,200 acre track south of San Antonio as the Land Heritage Institute of the Americas (http://www.landheritageinstitute.org/), an ecological research and heritage-education park. I work with board-member organizations, especially American Indians in Texa-at Spanish Colonial Missions (http://www.texasmissionindians.com/) and Tap Pilam-Coahuiltecan Nations. I am on the Board of Directors of the Cultural Preservation and Graves Protection Association, an Indian-based 501-C3 organization dedicated to obtaining legislative protecting for unmarked Indian graves in Texas.
