on Anthropologically Connected
Specialization in Applied Anthropology The ability to work in inter- and multi-disciplinary settings is a major aspect of contemporary applied anthropology – and a central feature of the graduate program in Anthropology within the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Applied anthropologists practice their craft in fields as diverse as law, medicine, health care, agriculture, forestry, health, environmental and social planning, tourism, cultural resource management (including archaeological sites), indigenous rights, forestry, conflict management, social services, and communications. Applying anthropology involves combining theory, ethnographic insight, and methodological expertise towards practical ends. Certificate of Advanced Studies in Conflict Resolution The Program on the Analysis and Resolution of Conflicts Certificate includes :1) substantive familiarity with at least one source of conflict that will be of major concern during the coming decade, 2) knowledge of traditional approaches to resolving conflicts, 3) knowledge of alternative approaches to resolving conflicts, 4) experience in conflict resolution activities. Syracuse Social Movements Initiative The Initiative is an educational project of the Program on the Analysis and Resolution of Conflict (PARC) , located in the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. The Initiative seeks to educate students about the nature, challenges, and possibilities of social movements through a combination of rigorous academic courses, collaborative action research projects, and outreach to Upstate New York social movement groups. SSMI is founded on the conviction that it is necessary to unite the best scholarship with a commitment to building a world that is just, diverse and sustainable. Maxwell is the only major school where the professional graduate program in public administration is integrated within the larger school of social sciences (anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science and sociology). This strong tradition of interdisciplinary research and study provides a rich context for the professional study of public policy analysis and management. Cambell Public Affairs Institute The promotes better understanding of contemporary challenges in democratic governance. It explores the relationship between governments and citizens, to understand how governing institutions can be made more responsive to the needs of citizens and respectful of their rights. From 1997 to 2002, the institute was home to the Government Performance Project, an effort to assess the managerial capabilities of state, county, and city governments. Syracuse University has a well established and extensive involvement in teaching and research on the South Asian region: the nations of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The Center sponsors an extensive Outreach Program designed to help teachers in grades K-12 develop creative supplements to their South Asian curricula. This includes holding teacher training and student workshops, making presentations in area schools, suggesting and disseminating curricula, and lending videos, printed materials, and other resources from its collections.
