Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Interdisciplinary Graduate Program
in Environment and Resources

The Program was launched in October 2001 with a commitment not only to train new scholars and pursue new knowledge, but also to contribute to solutions for local, regional, and global problems. In the environmental arena, exciting new methodologies and insights are now arising from non-traditional combinations of natural science with perspectives derived from law, medicine, economics, the social sciences, foreign policy, and business. IPER students will acquire training and strength in this new approach to the study of our environment and its many resources.

Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach

Center for East Asian Studies

The Center supports a number of outreach activities in service to the region and nation, such as professional workshops for teachers, development of materials on Asia for use in schools, public lectures on East Asia topics, and advanced language practice groups. Since 1976 Stanford has been actively involved in utilizing its area studies resources to meet the need for improved international education at the elementary and secondary school levels - developing innovative curriculum materials, organizing teacher workshops, and bringing Asian Studies to K-14 classrooms in the Bay Area and beyond.

Center for Latin American Studies

Drawing on a distinguished faculty with multidisciplinary experience and a long history of research expertise in Latin America, the Center offers academic programs, coordinates a range of academic conferences and lectures that span diverse academic disciplines, and fosters interdisciplinary research. As part of its outreach program, it has historically sponsored fellowships for Bay Area elementary, secondary, and community college educators. These awards include a modest sum of money to be used for professional development activities including conferences, course materials, travel, and scholarship on topics related to Latin America.

Institute for Research on Women and Gender

The Center provides a focal point for gender research, creating a supportive community of scholars, promoting innovative interdisciplinary approaches, and leveraging the findings of research to influence decision-making in government and business. In a new multi-year study IRWG has partnered with the Palo Alto-based Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology to explore the factors that shape technical women's opportunities in Silicon Valley companies. We are interested in patterns of advancement through technical ladders and why so few women comprise high tech positions in the upper echelons of corporate leadership.

Program in Ethics and Society

The Program in Ethics in Society is designed to foster scholarship, teaching, and moral reflection on fundamental issues in personal and public life. Its Hope House Program is a collaborative effort with Stanford Continuing Studies. Hope House is a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility for women who were recently incarcerated. Each quarter, two Stanford faculty members offer a course in the humanities to the residents of Hope House. Focusing on such themes as ethics, social justice, and moral responsibility, the women of Hope House engage in college-level course work as part of their rehabilitation and recovery.
