Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Medical Anthropology Track

The Medical Anthropology specialization assures broad training in contemporary theory and method in anthropology to prepare students for both academic and non-academic positions. Among specific fields of interest are gender and health, reproduction and sexuality, ethnomedicine, chronic diseases, political economy of health, international health, bioethics, and health, immigration and development. Courses in the medical anthropology track explore health, healing, and ethics in cross-cultural perspective, including a focus on the culture and practices of biomedicine.  The Department also offers a M.A. in medical anthropology.

Globalization and International Development Track

The Globalization and International Development topical / theoretical specialization allows students to focus on key issues in global transformation. Core courses examine theories of sociocultural, economic, and political change in the context of globalization, as well as practice/applied approaches to important global issues. Critical processes such as ethnic conflict/identity formation, nationalism, and global population movements and trans-nationalism are examined and highlighted.

Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach

Institute for the Study of Earth and Man

The ISEM seeks to benefit the wider community by promoting and supporting interdisciplinary research at the interface of people, Earth, and the environment, and to share the results of that research with the broader community in meaningful ways.  Organized to enhance the departments of anthropology, geological sciences, and statistics at SMU, the ISEM fosters: 1) Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Research in geology, anthropology, archaeology, energy, and the environment; 2) Student and Faculty Expeditions and Laboratory Studies by providing funding for worthwhile projects; 3) Educational Outreach to teachers of all grade levels based on ISEM sponsored research; 4) Energy Industry and Community Outreach through symposia, industry briefings, roundtables, guest lectures, and museum consultations.

Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility

The Maguire Center seeks to recognize, honor, and model ethical behavior; provide moral reflection on the contemporary issues; and celebrate ethics that reflect SMU's fundamental goals throughout the campus and in the Greater Dallas community. As part of its mission, the Center 1) addresses pertinent contemporary issues with an annual conference. Experts in their fields stimulate new thought with participants while providing up-to-date information on particular topics. 2) Collaborates with civic, professional, and business organizations to offer university resources toward the building of healthier communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and to providing students with internships and other growth opportunities.  3) Participate in the burgeoning national commitment to "university citizenship" through both research and publication on ethics and leadership; 4) Honoring community citizens who exemplify the spirit of moral leadership and public virtue.

Clements Center for Southwest Studies

Established in fall 1996, SMU's Clements Center promotes research, publishing, teaching, and public programming in a variety of fields of inquiry related to the American Southwest. It offers a range of symposia that address public issues. For example, "Consumer Cultures Meet the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands", the seventh in the Clements Center’s symposia series, considers the dynamics of consumer capitalism in the borderlands between 1848 and the present. Convened more than a decade after NAFTA removed restrictions on the cross-border movement of goods and services, though not of people, this symposium considers the role of the border in the consumer culture of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
