Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Environmental Anthropology

The program emphasizes theory and methodology and their application to challenges in conservation, development and environmental change. Environmental anthropology is an exciting and growing specialty in anthropology, producing scholars who contribute to the understanding of current environmental problems, and who bring new perspectives to old questions about relationships between humans and the environment.

Graduate Certificate in
Human Dimensions of Environmental Change

The result of collaboration among faculty from a number of graduate programs, this certificate program helps students to pursue a concentration in the economic, cultural, historical, planning and other human dimensions of environmental change while carrying out a regular program of studies in one of the existing graduate programs. The certificate program helps interested students gain access to the outstanding resources available at Rutgers in areas such as environmental policy and economics, land use, marine conservation, natural resources management, environmental health, conservation ecology, political ecology, GIS and spatial analysis, climate change, ecological risk and environmental communication, science and technology policy, environmental planning and management, natural hazards, environmental history, sociology, anthropology, and more.

Graduate Certificate in Curatorial Studies

The Certificate considers museum history, philosophy and operations; exhibition planning, design, interpretation, and conservation. As part of the course, students have field trips to various museums and meet with museum directors, curators, conservators and exhibition designers. Internships are arranged at museums in the New York/New Jersey area with special consideration given to the individual student's field of study and interests.

Center for African Studies

The Center promotes the teaching of Africa through curricular and faculty development. It informs a broader public through a vigorous outreach program of community projects and educators' workshops for K-12 teachers and coordinates a large offering of Africa-related courses throughout the university system. Building on Rutger's commitment to international education, CAS also supports faculty research in Africa and builds linkages with Africa-based scholars, institutions of higher-learning and non-governmental organizations. CAS members serve as consultants to public officials, businesses, schools and non-governmental organizations.

Center for Women's Global Leadership

The Center for Women's Global Leadership develops and facilitates women's leadership for women's human rights and social justice worldwide. The Center's programs promote the leadership of women and advance feminist perspectives in policy-making processes in local, national and international arenas. Since 1990, the Global Center has fostered women's leadership in the area of human rights through women's global leadership institutes, strategic planning activities, international mobilization campaigns, UN monitoring, global education endeavors, publications, and a resource center.
