on Anthropologically Connected
The Department has a unique and innovative anthropological linguistics graduate program that emphasizes language maintenance and preservation along with the pedagogy of teaching Native American languages, many of which are endangered in our country. This program has close ties to American Indian communities and organizations in the state that are currently involved in teaching their languages and developing language materials and curriculum. Graduate students enrolled in the new linguistics program will have an opportunity to work closely with tribes and speakers in ways that only a few institutions have been able to allow their students to do in Indian country. Faculty in the department have helped Oklahoma tribes design and implement studies that include health care, native language education, fatherhood, ethnomedicine, federal recognition, genealogy, historical anthropology, politics, sociolinguistics, oral history, tribal histories and archives, and tribal cultural studies programs. M.A. in Native American Studies The program focuses on the study of American Indian cultures, history, arts, and contemporary policy issues. Using several disciplinary approaches allows students to deal with multiple perspectives on a range of issues, including formation of federal policy, aesthetics, cross-cultural communication and conflict and tribal identity. The University is located in the middle of a state which is home to 39 federally recognized Indian tribes and towns. M.A. of Liberal Studes/Museum Studies The Program explores the factors affecting museum policies and decision-making as well as addresses current issues related to museum practices. The MLS Museum Studies degree can be completed without any on-campus residency or one can have the option of brief on-campus internships or student projects. In addition to the many well-known and accredited museums in the state, the University of Oklahoma has two excellent museums as well as two internationally-recognized special collections. Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History at The University of Oklahoma inspires minds to understand the natural and cultural world through collection-based discovery, interpretation, and education. While Oklahoma materials are well-represented, collections also contain a rich diversity of specimens and objects from around the world. Research collections form the foundations for education programs and exhibits of the museum as well as for both basic and applied research. Through a variety of state and federal laws, the staff of the Survey works to preserve and protect important archeological resources. Each year, approximately 5000 projects such as oil and gas wells, wastewater treatment systems, industrial parks, and timber harvesting are evaluated to ensure that the information of valuable sites is not lost. Using Oklahoma's Burial Disturbance Law, the State Archaeologist works to protect prehistoric and historic cemeteries and to return Native people's remains to the proper tribe. The Archeological Survey has also developed a number of programs for the public schools.
