Laboratory for Human Biology Research The Laboratory for Human Biology Research is committed to collaborative, population-based research into the biological, social, and cultural factors that shape human biology and health in a range of international and U.S. settings. Among the research topics covered are: a) ecology of iron deficiency and immune function in northern Kenya; b) influence of acculturation and lifestyle change on health and nutritional status of indigenous populations of lowland Bolivia; and c) physiological adaptations to cold stress and the health consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union on indigenous Siberian populations. Graduate students are a central part of the lab community, where regular meetings provide a forum for lab members to discuss laboratory methods, difficulties and results from ongoing research. Students, in the Field School, are placed as volunteers in an agency or organization -- previously on the Navajo Reservation or in a rural Spanish-speaking community in northern New Mexico and, starting in 2006, instead in Chicago. Some illustrations of the areas in which students previously worked include: researching the Navajo-Hopi land disputes; working with alcohol abuse programs for Native American men and women; helping in Navajo senior citizen programs; assisting in a Navajo school for exceptional children; and helping the Navajo Nation EPA and other environmental programs. The Center's activities bring to campus leading scholars in the African humanities, distinguished social scientists, performers, artists, and notable analysts and activists in international political life in Africa and the African diaspora. Seminars, talks, performances, and film screenings occur throughout the academic year. The Center's Institute for Advanced Studies & Research on African Humanities sponsors "Transcending Boundaries: The Humanities and Socioeconomic Transformations in the African World," a multiyear collaborative project of Northwestern University, the University of Ghana-Legon, and the Dakar-based Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) to develop new and significant scholarship in the African humanities. The project enhances opportunities for study, research, curriculum development, and creative work by African scholars and practitioners (writers, artists, musicians, performers, and cultural specialists). The Institute is involved in interdisciplinary public policy research. Its mission is to stimulate and support social science research on significant public policy issues and to disseminate the findings widely - to students, scholars, policymakers, and the public at large. Among its programs are: a) Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies; b) Community Development; c) Law and Justice Studies; d) Philanthropy, Voluntarism, and Nonprofit Organizations; e) Politics, Institutions and Public Policy; and f) Poverty, Race, and Inequality. Its working groups include: a) Health Policy and b) Urban Policy.
