on Anthropologically Connected
The Program provides training in the analysis of health and illness in the context of culture, social behavior, political and economic systems, and human biology. The program addresses a broad realm of phenomena including cosmology, experiences of suffering, and the dynamics of the life cycle, analysis of medical systems, and health disparity in the U.S. The program is research-oriented and graduates hold faculty positions as well as positions evaluating government programs, administering medical services, overseeing the review of medical research proposals, and carrying out research on health. Culture, Resources, and Power Concentration As capital and commodities, travelers and technologies circulate more rapidly, local identities and practices are increasingly shaped through the interplay of local and non-local forces. The Concentration strives to follow people caught up in motion as well as to investigate the multiple forces that impinge on local communities. In this respect, fieldwork often constitutes a collaborative process with others. Among the Concentration's interrelated themes are: a) Local, National and Transnational Identities; b) Political Ecology and Sustainability; c) Economic Development and Social Policy; d) Social Justice and Human Rights; e) Language, Discourse, and Power, and f) Production of Knowledge. The Concentration prepares students to contribute to policy formation and implementation. The Forensic Science Masters program is designed to give students a broad theoretical and practical background in the scientific, legal, and investigative aspects of forensic science while providing the opportunity to study one of the major disciplines in depth. Great Lakes Archaeology and Ethnohistory The Department has a strong reputation for its work in Great Lakes studies. The Program possesses a significant outreach component, and faculty are actively engaged with local communities and citizens. Faculty regularly provide presentations to public schools and community organizations as well as assist both state and federal agencies that manage public lands and development in Michigan in the development of appropriate public policy. Many graduates are in prominent government management positions for Great Lakes properties in Michigan and elsewhere. Gender, Justice and Environmental Change Program The Program promotes collaborative research, scholarship, and public awareness of the linkages between gender, social and environmental justice, and environmental issues. Researchers, policy-makers, and activists have increasingly recognized the critical importance of these interlocking dimensions for understanding the social relations underlying many environmental problems, from Love Canal in New York to the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. Examples of scholarship in this field include: a) the environmental politics of global issues such as biotechnology and transnational industry; b) grassroots environmental justice movements; and c) mediating the use and management of natural resources. The Program is comprised of five courses intended to prepare students for professional employment in historic preservation, systematic biology, collection curation, exhibition development, folklife studies, museum work, educational programming, park interpretation, and public policy planning. The series of courses gives a broad overview of museum history as well as a solid grounding in museological theory and practice. Particular attention is given to issues of diversity and multiculturalism, the relationship of museums to changing populations and disciplinary trends, and the examination of diverse types of collections. American Indian Studies at the graduate and undergraduate level seeks to form an understanding of American Indian cultures and identities, the place of American Indian/ Indigenous people in today’s world, and the changing demands of American Indian/Indigenous peoples in the pursuit of cross-cultural diversity. The Native population of Michigan is proportionally one of the largest of those states east of the Mississippi. By stressing the interrelationship of academia, community, faculty, and students the American Indian Studies Program at MSU creates a stronger learning, understanding and sustainable commitment to both American Indian studies and Native/Indigenous communities. Consortium for Archaeological Research The Consortium for Archaeological research integrates the use of differing disciplinary orientations and methods for research and dissemination of knowledge about past human societies through the use of written documentation and the material remains of past human behavior. The Consortium works closely with public groups interested in archaeology and members of the consortium make regular presentations to lay audiences including public school classes. Established in 1960, the Center's research capabilities, including one of the largest research libraries on Africa in the nation, have produced information about Africa for scholars, policy-makers, publishers and the media, foreign service officials, and the public. Through the Center, MSU has developed linkages with a number of African universities and associations, particularly University of Nigeria at Nsukka, Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), University of Zimbabwe, and Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (Senegal). The Outreach Program is built around Africa-specific and collaborative initiatives which link cooperating units at MSU with community-based, statewide and national consortia in K-12 and higher education. The African Media Program seeks to identify high quality film, video, and television images of Africa and to disseminate this information to media users. The Program also provides services to the business community, the state and federal government, and religious and community groups. The Center is distinguished by its comprehensive attention to East, South, and Southeast Asia in the design of its curriculum, focus of faculty research, and scope of outreach activities. The Center puts high priority on outreach activities to serve the MSU, Greater Lansing, and state communities. Activities take a wide variety of forms, including: cultural events such as exhibits, film festivals, musical performances, and demonstrations; workshops for K-12 teachers and administrators; and advice and other assistance to state government or other organizations. Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies The Center leads the state in providing seminars and lectures to businesses and professional organizations on Latin American and Caribbean economic, social and political issues. Faculty members regularly present lectures for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, a state agency seeking to increase international trade. The Center is launching a new, teacher-driven website called LASER (Latin American School and Educational Resources) which includes social, geographical, economic, and historical issues, with a significant emphasis on current events. Center for Advanced Study of International Development The Center interprets "international development" as a process which goes beyond the usual stereotypical confines of agricultural research, one that cut across a wide, multidisciplinary spectrum: hunger, poverty, the global economy, the environment and it use and misuse, and social justice - issues which critically affect the quality of life, many times even the existence of life itself. The Center is involved in a variety of education and training programs in European, Eurasian, Near Eastern and Asian countries that seek to address the rapid political, social and economic changes that are occurring worldwide. Outreach activities organized by the Center include thematic workshops for K-12 teachers on international development issues and the organization of in-services with school districts in Michigan. Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences The Center
is committed to supporting reflective practice in health care and
in science, by bringing to these
fields the resources of ethics and the humanities. Community
outreach is at the core of the Center's activities: Involvement in
outreach activities - such as workshops, public speaking, advising
or consulting - help the Center's faculty understand the institutions
about which they teach and write, and help them develop fruitful working
relationships with practitioners. The Center hopes to deepen
the level of public, democratic deliberation about health and science
policy.
Institute of International Agriculture The Institute promotes and coordinates international development programs of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources such as conducting collaborative research with host country scientists and providing consultant services to international research organizations. In the MSU-US/China Rural Development Training Program, the Institute runs 8-10 training programs each year for more than 100 government officials and senior administrators from China concerning such topics as macro agro-economic policy, rural economic development, and agricultural technology. The Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa seeks to mobilize public and private support for increased levels of assistance to Africa and to create a plan for making assistance more effective. Michigan State University Museum As Michigan's largest public natural and cultural history museum, the "is committed to understanding, interpreting, and respecting natural and cultural diversity through education, exhibitions, research, and the building and stewardship of collections." The Museum reaches a broad and diverse audience through accessible collections, public service and education programs, traveling exhibits, and innovative partnerships with Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The Museum is the leader in state public archaeology work. Its Anthropology Division includes more than one million archaeological items and 25,000 ethnographic artifacts.
