on Anthropologically Connected
Medical anthropology at KU offers students important opportunities to integrate sociocultural and biomedical approaches. The faculty research and teaching around health and illness cover diverse topics and specializations, including: disease and nutrition, international health policy and human rights, and technologies in human reproduction. Medical anthropology students are uniquely positioned to develop a robust knowledge of the diversity of anthropological methods needed to analyze health and illness. The program places particular emphasis on applied (service) linguistics of a cooperative nature in the American mid- and southwest and Inner Asia. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to participate in and conduct cooperative field service or research projects. Recent research projects include revitalization projects in Oklahoma and an endangered-language multimedia documentation project in North Tibet. Linguistic anthropology maintains close ties with KU’s Child Language Program and with the Center for Indigenous Nations Studies. Socio-Cultural Faculty Focus on Applied Anthropology Applied anthropology is the primary focus of four faculty members, and studies by other sociocultural anthropologists often address policy and social problems. Such projects have included development studies in East Asia and the Pacific; asymmetric conflicts; the meat and poultry industry's impact on workers and communities in the High Plains and Upper South; analysis of community development, social movements, and human rights in Peruvian Amazonia; evaluation of the implications of natural resource management policies for traditional resource extractors in rural Florida; videography to support health care among Cabecar Indians in Costa Rica; and the cultural consequences of testing and other technologies in contemporary America. Museum Studies Program, Anthropology Track By means of a cooperative arrangement between the Department of Anthropology and the Museum of Anthropology, a student pursuing a Masters in Historical Administration and Museum Studies can opt for a study track emphasizing anthropology and providing the necessary background to qualify for positions in anthropology museums. Courses in the anthropology track are designed to provide students with an introduction to the breadth and integrity of anthropology; a familiarization with those subdisciplines which deal with material items and associated documentation: archaeology, cultural anthropology (ethnography), physical anthropology; and, a comprehension of the special problems of anthropology museums and their solutions, both theoretically and practically (through an apprenticeship). The
purpose of the Museum is to foster an appreciation of the significance
of the physical and cultural diversity of humanity through the
creation, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about peoples
around the world from earliest times to the present. Museum collections
include hundreds of thousands of archaeological specimens, most
from the Great Plains and Midwestern portions of the United States,
but also from the Southwestern United States, and from Latin America,
Polynesia, and Europe. Approximately 6,000 ethnographic items are
from North America, Africa, New Guinea, Australia, and South America. Center for Latin American Studies The Center of Latin American Studies serves as a major resource for the State of Kansas, the Great Plains and the nation. The quality and long term stability of the Center and its academic programs are unequaled between the Mississippi River and the West Coast. The Center conducts educational outreach to local and regional K-12 schools, two- and four-year institutions, businesses, state agencies, community organizations as well as teachers' workshops and curriculum development. The Center coordinates and develops the interdisciplinary interests of Africanists across the University of Kansas, and promotes the study and understanding of Africa in the university, the state and the region. The ASRC Outreach Program promotes the understanding of Africa by offering diverse services that help to increase knowledge about Africa. Our audience includes the University community; K-12 teachers and students; Community college teachers and students; educational organizations, community groups and the general public as a whole (see calendar of current events). The Center for East Asian Studies, the only such resource center in the entire Great Plains region, seeks to enhance skills in, and the knowledge and awareness of, the languages, traditions and the contemporary importance of East Asia among all the people of the state. Outreach is an integral part of the Center. Ffaculty and associates share their expertise on China, Korea and Japan with K-12 educators and post-secondary instructors, as well as with communities and businesses in Kansas and Missouri through a variety of structured events. These can range from classroom visits and teacher workshops, to public lectures and collaborative conferences.
