Archaeology and Social Context This track in the archaeology doctoral program bridges the subfields of Social/Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology to address archaeological issues as they apply to contemporary peoples. Students are expected to develop individualized interest areas that may include, but are not limited to, cultural property, public archaeology, archaeological ethics, heritage management and repatriation. Center for Training and Research The Center's mission is to to provide a setting where interdisciplinary training and research on the human dimensions of global environmental change can take place. It provides training and research opportunities for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and visitors. At present, research focuses on studying deforestation in the Amazon Basin by means of satellite digital data and field studies. Training focuses on population and environment, GIS, and satellite image analysis. The Center is designed to be interdisciplinary and to place greater emphasis on local responses to environmental change than is the norm at global change centers. Students are able to conduct their student teaching (to be certified teachers) either on an American Indian Reservation or overseas. The American Indian Reservation Project's goals are: a) to provide opportunities for student teachers to live and work in a culturally different setting and to utilize culturally appropriate and pluralistic learning activities and materials in the classroom; b) to enhance the teaching performance of elementary and secondary student teachers with an emphasis on their ability to function as effective and understanding educators of American Indian youth; c) to increase student teacher understanding of the history, culture, values, and aspirations of American Indians; and d) to make a small contribution toward the development and acceptance of cultural pluralism in our national life. Advanced graduate students have designed a course for undergraduates that emphasizes "local" ethnography in the city of Bloomington. A class, for example, worked with the Bloomington Adult Community Center to answer the questions its directors had about how to draw more 50-60 year olds. The result was a thoughtful combination of surveys, community data, and interviews that has given the center the information it needs. American Indian Studies Research Institute The Institute serve as an interdisciplinary research center for projects focusing on the native peoples of the Americas. In respect to its educational outreach, the Institute works cooperatively with American Indian educational institutions to make the products of scientific research available to the communities in which the research was conducted. Today the foremost concern of most communities is language loss and language retention. To address that concern, the Institute has worked for over a decade to develop language curricula and other materials that can support language instruction programs in elementary and secondary schools as well as in community colleges. Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology The Laboratory undertakes field work, curates the collections derived from these projects, administers publication and public education programs, and serves as a clearing-house for information on the study and conservation of archaeological resources. Because archaeology is of interest to the public, the Laboratory personnel work with avocational organizations, respond to a wide range of requests for archaeological information, and foster programs that contribute to a better public understanding of archaeological scholarship and historic preservation. The Laboratory's Office of Cultural Resource Management seeks to a) provide historic preservation services for the state of Indiana; b) train graduate and undergraduate students in the methods of archaeology and cultural resource management through applied experience; c) develop a database of archaeological resources to facilitate planning, preservation, and research goals; d) inform the public about archaeology and historic preservation in Indiana. The Laboratory has the primary goal of maintaining extensive research and teaching collections of vertebrate bones and skeletons. While the Laboratory is archaeology oriented, it has been responsible for the identification and interpretation of faunal specimens recovered by various law-enforcement agencies, museums and the public. It's vast collection of faunal specimens are used for comparative analysis of specimens recovered from archaeology excavations worldwide. Center for Archaeology in the Public Interest The purpose of the Center is to a) foster research and communication about the potential for sustainable exploitation of cultural resources all over the world, b) promote awareness within the discipline of archaeology, as well as in the international anthropological community, of the impact of archaeological projects on people and culture in both the United States and in other nations; c) encourage archaeologists to discuss ethical standards of behavior and consider cross-cultural standards; and d) emphasize participation of local populations in the sustainable use of cultural resources. The students and faculty of the Folklore Institute work together to document, describe, analyze, and interpret the interplay of creativity and tradition in folklore, whether it takes place in rural or urban, popular or elite, past or present settings. The Traditional Arts Indiana Project is dedicated to expanding public awareness of Indiana's traditional practices and nurturing a sense of pride among Indiana's traditional artists. The Project: a) documents Indiana's traditional arts and artists; b) archives materials for public use at the Indiana Historical Society Library and Archive, c) produces public programs; and d) trains in cultural documentation and public presentation. The Program emphasizes the interdisciplinary study of Africa. Among its goals are: a) Research (to promote cutting-edge research on Africa as well as facilitate Africa-related collections and activities in museums, libraries, music archives, and institutes); b) Teaching (to promote graduate and undergraduate education); c) Exchanges (to promote the exchange of students, faculty, and materials between the U.S. and Africa); d) Outreach (to promote outreach activities to schools, colleges, and universities, as well as to communities, not-for-profit institutions, businesses, and other groups as well as teach Africa-related topics to non-university communities); e) Technology (to promote the development of new resources and technologies for teaching and researching Africa); and f) Enrichment (to promote cultural, artistic, musical, and other activities related to Africa). Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies The Center emphasizes interdisciplinary research and instruction focused on Latin America and the Caribbean. Among its outreach activities are: a) an audiovisual resource library, b) student/teacher workshops for elementary and secondary students and teachers; c) a Day of the Dead celebration; d) a public lecture series; e) a speakers service to lecture on Latin American and Caribbean topics in and around Bloomington, f) a summer institute for International Studies for K-12 teachers and high school students; and g) interactive video assistance for developing two-way interactive video classes and special programs for K-12 audiences. for the Study of Institutions, Population, The Center is committed to advancing current understanding of the human dimensions of global environmental change, especially the causes, processes, and outcomes associated with changes in forest conditions. CIPEC outreach activities involve diverse activities that reflect its goal to reach K-12 grades as well as higher education. High school students and teachers of grades 7-12 have the opportunity to attend annual two-week summer institutes at the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. It is also developing educational "discovery" kits for use in regional elementary and secondary schools. In addition, the sponsors Open Science Forums, the Global Speakers Service, and High School Summer Internships. Mathers Museum of World Cultures Through its collections, exhibits, and programs, the Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting knowledge of the world's cultures. In all of its activities, the Museum strives to further its audiences' understanding of both the diversity of the world's specific cultures and the underlying unity of cultures as a human phenomenon. The Museum a) through exhibits and educational programming provides audiences of diverse ages and backgrounds with opportunities for informal, non-classroom education about the world's cultural heritage; b) makes collections available for coursework as well as provides a "Teaching with Objects and Photographs" manual for K-12 classes, and c) helps train students for careers in museums.
