Interdisciplinary
Concentration in The Graduate Center offers an interdisciplinary concentration in Public Policy and Urban Studies. Students enrolled in anthropology may select interdisciplinary work in public policy or urban studies as an area of concentration. The work in public policy involves students in the analysis of basic questions and approaches concerning the direction and governance of contemporary metropolitan areas. It prepares students to work in public agencies and private organizations focusing on policy development and innovation; to work in city, state, and federal agencies; to work with neighborhoods, cities, and regions; to staff administrative and legislative bodies; and to work as journalists, writers, and research scholars. A related research project in the Anthropology Department involves the New York State Scholar Practitioner Team. Concentration on Public Education Policies The unusual number of specialists in creole languages among Anthropology and Linguistics faculty allows a concentration on public education policies for speakers of such languages for whom English is a second language or, with even more subtle problems, a second dialect. Interdisciplinary Concentration in Health and Society The concentration directly draws on the doctoral program in anthropology. Courses offered in this concentration are designed to provide historical, theoretical, and critical perspectives on health and society. Students in this concentration will be encouraged to link academic concerns and research to "real-world" issues. The emphasis is on relating theory and research findings to applied health policy issues. The use of the term health and society, rather than illness and society, reflects the basic orientation of the program. Interdisciplinary
Concentration in Students from the anthropology doctoral program study the historical, literary, political, economic, social, and cultural legacies of the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. In facing the challenge of coordinating interdisciplinary academic endeavors, the Interdisciplinary Concentration coordinates a series of activities, lectures, and interdisciplinary seminars to enhance the exchange of ideas and experiences. It also helps students use New York area resources, such as the Americas Society, the Colonial Latin American review, the Inter-American Cultural Studies Network, the Hispanic Society, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Spanish Institute. Certificate Program in Women Studies Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary approach that draws on various disciplines, including anthropology, while challenging disciplinary boundaries. The general aim of the program is to offer critical reflection on the experiences of both women and men in terms of differences of gender, sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, and nation. Particular attention is paid to the conditions of women's lives and the varied forms of struggle to which these give rise. Middle East & Middle Eastern American Center MEMEAC's mission is to promote the study of the Middle East and Middle Eastern Americans and is the only center in the country that incorporates the Middle Eastern American experience into Middle East Studies. The Center sponsors lectures, seminars, and conferences, conducts research, serves as a resource for both the CUNY community and the public at large, and engages in outreach. In association with the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning, Graduate Center, CUNY, MEMEAC has supervised an oral history project, recording the voices of Arab and Muslim Americans for regarding the events following September 11. CUNY Northern Science and Education Center The Northern Science and Education Center at the City University of New York, a collaborative effort involving four college campuses and The Graduate Center, has its headquarters at Brooklyn College's department of Anthropology and Archaeology. Environmental change concerns have stimulated coordinated interdisciplinary work on the long term record of human-environmental interaction. As part of its public outreach there is coordinated work with northern native communities. Since 1993 Professor Dombrowski, for example, has been working with the Haida tribe of Alaska on issues of culture, history, and cultural rights.
