Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Program on Gender and Global Change

This is a multi- and interdisciplinary program focused on comparative historical analyses of changing patterns of gender relations. The Program seeks to deepen our understanding of how gender intersects with other dimensions of identity; how different experiences of gender shape social, economic, and intellectual change; and how gender relationships and identities themselves are reproduced and transformed in different parts of the world.  The program encourages dialogue and collaboration among scholars, policy-makers, political activists and others working toward understanding patterns of gender dynamics as these correspond to changing structural and cultural practices.

Participatory Action Network

The Cornell Participatory Action Research Network is a network of students, staff, faculty and community members committed to the study and promotion of participatory action research.  This involves systematic inquiry in which those who are experiencing a problem in an organization or community participate collaboratively with trained researchers in deciding the focus for collecting and analyzing information as well as taking action to improve their situation.

East Asia Program

The Program supports exploration of  East Asia through courses, faculty research, libraries, art exhibitions, language-learning resources, student organizations, and exchange programs.  Its outreach activities relate to Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong as well as Tibet and extend from local, to regional and national audiences. Audiences include elementary, secondary and post-secondary educational institutions, businesses, government, media organizations and the general public.

South Asia Program

The Program coordinates teaching, research, and campus activities focusing on the Indian subcontinent, which comprises the modern nations of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.  The Program emphasizes several outreach programs for area primary and secondary teachers.  Among them is a multimedia program for children which includes classical Indian dance in the form of a performance, lecture-demonstration and/or workshop.

Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art

The Museum has one of the finest collections of art in New York State and is recognized as one of the more important university museums in the country. Spanning the history of art, the Museum's collections are especially strong in Asian art, nineteenth and twentieth-century American art, and the graphic arts.  Its Asian collection includes outstanding works from China, Japan, and India while another features artifacts and objects from Africa, Pre-Columbian America, and Oceania.
