on Anthropologically Connected
The M.A. in Museum Anthropology, offered jointly by the Department of Anthropology at Columbia and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), is a professional degree for those currently working in or interested in moving into the museum field. Students learn the practical skills entailed in working in museums and develop the theoretical perspective essential to those who use material culture to express ideas through visual display. The program prepares students to interpret ethnographic and archaeological collections for the general public, work in registration or collections management, and become scientific or research staff at facilities ranging from small local museums to larger institutions. Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach Institute for Research in African-American Studies The strategic research mission of the Institute is the critical examination of contemporary black politics, social relations, culture and history. From the outset, the Institute's motto has been "academic excellence and social responsibility." For social and health professionals who deliver services to African American populations, the African-American Studies Master's degree will enhance their understanding of the complex social, cultural, and historical experiences of the communities, which will lead to more effective delivery of services. For educators who teach or administrate at the secondary or community college level, the degree will enhance their understanding of race relations between students, and enable them to develop curricula that address specific ethnic/racial groups who have been integral to the American experience. The Institute coordinates the many activities at Columbia University that relate to Southern Asia -- mainly the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. The Institute's outreach activities have included briefings for the media, particularly on events such as elections; teacher training workshops; and the collection and development of materials on South Asia for use in schools and colleges, and by the general public. Columbia's National Resource Center for South Asia is a major source of support for these activities and for instructional development within educational institutions. The Institute, one of eight regional institutes at Columbia University's School of International Affairs, provides a special forum for students, faculty and others with an interest in the multitude of issues facing the African continent. Founded in 1959 the Institute has prepared generations of Africa practitioners for careers in development, diplomacy, business, governance journalism, law, and human rights. Fostering an inter-regional and multi-disciplinary approach to the region, the Institute focuses on the Arab countries, Armenia, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Central Asia, and Muslim Diaspora communities. The Institute offers courses and outreach seminars to teachers and adult education groups, briefs journalists, and generally acts as a clearing-house for requests for information on the region and its peoples by the media, educational professionals, and the interested public. Weatherhead East Asian Institute Through its research projects, conferences, and seminars, the Institute creates an international forum to address the critical issues facing the Asia-Pacific region today. The Asia for Educators Program (AFE), based at the Institute, sponsors and co-sponsors numerous programs around the country to support education at both the undergraduate and K-12 levels. AFE offers seminars and study tours for teachers in conjunction with institutions in fifteen other states; develops and publishes resources for teachers; initiates school-to-school exchange programs between schools in the United States and counterparts in China, Japan, and Korea; and encourages study tours for key actors in states seeking to incorporate more study of Asia in the standard curriculum. Center for Environmental Research and Conservation CERC is a consortium of Columbia University, the American Museum of Natural History, The New York Botanical Garden, Wildlife Conservation Society, and Wildlife Trust. Our multi-disciplinary efforts in Education, Research, Training, and Outreach bring together over 75 scientists with expertise in the natural and social sciences from these institutions in order to promote environmental conservation around the world. A mid-career program, the Morningside Institute, is devoted to providing training to professionals in conservation-related fields who are seeking to round out their academic background, gain new skills, and profit intellectually from interaction with other professionals, students, and researchers. From studying the population dynamics and genetics of elephants across Asia, to compiling data on the nutritional needs of wild and captive animals in Latin America, CERC researchers extend their efforts worldwide to provide scientifically sound information to assist in policy-making on local and regional levels.
