Data
on Anthropologically Connected
The applied anthropology degree program is designed for non-anthropologists who are already engaged in, or plan to enter, such fields as medicine, public health, education, journalism, law, environmental management, social services to refugee or immigrant populations, rural development, or public policy evaluation. It is designed to provide the student with a basic anthropological training and an appreciation of the significance of a cross-cultural perspective in professional practice. The African Studies Center at Boston University, established in 1953, was one of the first graduate programs in the United States to offer a multidisciplinary African Studies curriculum. Over the decades it has achieved international recognition for its commitment to teaching, research, and publications. Opened in 1979, the Outreach Program seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of Africa by providing information, materials, and services to schools, libraries, museums, the media, and community groups in New England and beyond. The Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs The Institute explores the place of culture on the world scene, with special attention to religion as a central component of culture. One of its programs, the Tolerance project, has as a guiding principle arguments for tolerance and pluralism must be developed from within religious traditions and not simply from secular, Enlightenment principles of citizenship and of the polity. The project is currently being implemented in three sites: Berlin, Sarajevo, and Jerusalem. A three-year project is under way in each site to develop curricula handbooks to be used in religious schools to teach tolerance from within a religious context.
