Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Anthropology and Population Program

Anthropology and Population is a special track in Brown University's Ph.D. program in anthropology. Birth, death, marriage, household organization and migration are central to the lives of all people, and they have been at the core of anthropology since it became a discipline. World population problems , attract attention daily and take different forms in different parts of the world: high rates of population growth and density, high volumes of migration, low fertility and population aging. Solving these problems will certainly be among the most important issues of the present century.

M.A. in Anthropology/Museum Studies

The MA in anthropology-museum studies combines the core features of the MA in anthropology with two specialized seminars and a museum-related research paper.  The program includes the study, analysis, and exhibition of material culture as well as museological study and practice. The degree is designed for students who wish to take advantage of close ties between the Department of Anthropology and the Haffenreffer Museum and to develop museum-related employment opportunities.

Circumpolar Studies

Circumpolar Studies is a focus of graduate study offering relevant theoretical, methodological and substantive courses and research opportunities for students with professional interests in the northern social sciences.  For many years Brown University students and faculty have been working with cultural resource specialists of the National Park Service's Northwest Alaska office in Kotzebue to explore the Park lands of the region, including the Noatak and Kobuk Rivers, Cape Krusenstern, and the Seward Peninsula. Graduates with this specialty have been successful as professionals in universities, governmental agencies, and research organizations both in the north and elsewhere.

Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach

The Watson Center for International Studies

The Watson Institute’s mission and scope today include support of multidisciplinary research, teaching, and public education on international affairs. The Institute promotes the work of students, faculty, visiting scholars, and policy practitioners who analyze and develop initiatives to address contemporary global problems. The Politics, Culture, and Identity Program uses a multidisciplinary approach to investigate how political identities are constructed. It asks how people come to identify themselves with states, nations, ethnic groups, political parties, and other collective identities, and how religious identities come to be used for political purposes.  Its Choices Program engages students at the secondary level in international issues and contributes to a renewal of civic engagement among young people in the United States.

The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in Aermica

The Center was created to facilitate research on race and ethnicity as social constructions in American society, coordinate and develop Brown's resources for research and teaching on racial and ethnic minorities in America, generate intellectual and financial resources for the Center, and promote university-wide discussion of issues relating to race and ethnicity.  A key element of its outreach program is its Native to Native Program which involves providing an open dialogue between Native Americans from various Southeastern Native American tribes, bands, and clans (especially the Narragansett, Wampanoag, Pequot, and Massachusett peoples) in “Native-to-Native Gatherings.”  The gatherings emphasize (1) the sharing of family histories and geneology, common experiences can be used to validate or disprove what is presently being taught at the elementary and secondary education levels about the indigenous peoples of the Southeastern region and (2) the sharing information and creating a communications venue, radio and/or television, to discuss common issues and concerns to build collaborations between all of the native peoples in the area.

Center for Latin American Studies

The Center for Latin American Studies at Brown University promotes an understanding of the culture, history, and contemporary problems of Latin America.  Mesolore™, distributed by the Center, provides course materials on Mesoamerica, one of the seven places in the world where people independently made the transition from village to urban life. The program has received broad critical acclaim from high school teachers across the country.

The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology

The museum provides opportunities for communicating an anthropological perspective to the community at large through exhibitions, a school education program, and an annual lecture and occasional publication series.  It has been offering experiential educational programs for over 30 years.  The Adventures in Anthropology is a series of 2-hour, engaging, hands-on, curriculum-correlated educational experiences for students K-12, including group tours and field trips. The museum's culture caravan visits K-12 grades students offering a wide assortment of hands-on materials and projects for the classroom. Class discussions emphasize how to think about the indigenous people of a particular region; activities include corn-grinding, making pemmican, making a traditional craft, and using a bow drill.
