on Anthropologically Connected
The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (a revised and widented Anthropology Department) focuses on a number of research themes, including: (1) Biological, Social, and Cultural Dimensions of Human Health, (2) Culture, Heritage, and Identity, (3) Urban Societies, and (4) Global Dynamics and Regional Interactions. Center for Environmental Studies The Center facilitates collaboration among Arizona State University faculty researchers and assists in decision making about environmental issues. It advances identification of key local and global environmental issues and collects reliable information to be used by scholars, policymakers and the greater public. Environmental education and outreach initiatives are woven into the Center for Environmental Studies' research programs, conferences, and workshops. Primary and secondary students and teachers, for example have pportunities to work with Arizona State University students and faculty in long-term ecological monitoring through the Ecology Explorers program. The Center also offers the Environmental Education Resource Guide; participates in Super Science Saturday and environmental education fairs; and develops educational materials associated with long-term research projects. Archaeological Research Institute The was established in 1995 as a unit of Arizona State University to undertake the preservation of archaeological materials and related data, to pursue research activities associated with the archaeological record, and to conduct educational programs to disseminate knowledge of the past to Arizona's citizens. ARI encourages and facilitates Native American involvement and training in curation management and museum operation. The public outreach activities conducted by ARI staff are intended to inform the widest possible audience on the activities of the repository and at the same time convey information on archaeology and central Arizona prehistory that will enhance public interest and respect for cultural materials. Center for Bioarchaeological Research Dedicated to discovering and communicating new knowledge about past peoples, the center CBR outreach initiatives involve increasing public awareness of past peoples and applying this information to contemporary problems with deep roots. Outreach efforts include developing collaborative research and education initiatives with descendant groups, both directly through the CBR and in partnership with other institutions, such as the Center for American Archeology (CAA), located in west-central Illinois. The Museum's exhibits reflect human efforts over time to adapt to—and create systems of meaning within—changing natural, social and political environments. Museum exhibits involve the collaborative efforts of student, faculty and community and, as such, reflect a wide range of interests and topics of study. The Museum aims to share with audiences the many ways in which cultural expression finds form, as well as to highlight creative and adaptive strategies pursued by human communities in different places and in different times. Center for Latin American Studies The Center (CLAS) was created to provide our students, faculty, staff, the business sector, and residents of this state, with the requisite skills to allow us to enter into partnerships with the diverse nations and peoples of our own Western Hemisphere. The Center for Latin American Studies seeks to enter into partnerships with community organizations and the Arizona business community with an interest in Latin America. The CLAS seeks to serve as a focal point for identifying programs that provide opportunities for partnerships for our larger Arizona community in the areas of language acquisition, socio-cultural exchange, and economic development opportunities. The mission of the Center is to promote and support the study of Asia at Arizona State University, in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and in the greater community. The Center's outreach program has become affiliated with the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) as the Arizona site for organizing annual professional development seminars in Asian Studies for secondary school teachers. The affiliated Program for Southeast Asian Studies is also actively participating in outreach activities to K-12 and community organizations including the Arizona Asian American Association, as well as Southeast Asian American communities, city officials, and business communities. Russian and East European Studies Center The Center administers research, training, and outreach programs involving the lands and people of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Over two dozen ASU faculty from five colleges and the university libraries collaborate in Center programming. REESC also works with other post-secondary educational institutions, government agencies, local high schools, and private corporations in coordinating programs of research, study, travel, and exchange relating to Russia and Eastern Europe. The Institute of Human Origins The Institute of Human Origins (IHO) conducts, interprets and publicizes scientific research on the human career. IHO’s unique approach brings together scientists from diverse disciplines to develop integrated, bio-behavioral investigations of human evolution. Through research, education, and the sponsorship of scholarly interaction, IHO advances scientific understanding of our origins and its contemporary relevance. Combining interdisciplinary expertise and targeted funding, IHO fosters the pursuit of integrated solutions to the most important questions regarding the course, cause and timing of events in human evolution.
