Departmental & Inter-Departmental Programs

Medical Anthropology Concentration

An intensive graduate program in medical anthropology is offered as a concentration area in the Department. Courses range in focus from anthropology of the body, health and illness to health and the human life cycle, biocultural anthropology to political ecology, ethnomedicine to applications of anthropology in clinical and community contexts, international health to women in development, adolescent health to gender, health and sexuality. Students have the opportunity to pursue a Masters in Public Health (MPH) as a complement to their medical anthropology training. A graduate certificate in medical anthropology for motivated health science professionals and gifted developing world social scientists is offered by the department for scholars who wish to receive specialized training. A MD/ Ph.D. program is possible to pursue as well.

Applied Anthropology Concentration

The Department offers training in applied anthrpology through coursework and guided research opportunities in the Arizona State Museum and the Bureau of Applied Reserach in Anthropology. Students participating in this concentration are given broad training in both academic and applied anthropology.

Ecological and Environmental Concentration

The Department has historically been a leader in ecological and environmental anthropology. This synthetic concentration forges strong links between anthropology and other disciplines concerned with human impacts on the environment, sustainability, conservation, and evolutionary ecology.

Southwest Land, Culture, and Society Concentration

The concentration integrates integrates courses and a wide array of ongoing research into an anthropologically-oriented, interdisciplinary framework that focuses on how the many peoples of the Greater Southwest have interacted with one another and with the region’s dynamic natural environment over the last 12,000 years.  The Program is intended to serve as a formalized node, interconnecting faculty and students within the university, while strengthening their linkages to external communities.   It provides a visible point of contact for constituencies outside the university seeking expertise and outreach in anthropologically-oriented Southwestern issues.

Rogers Program on Law, Philosophy and Social Inquiry

The Rogers Program is an interdisciplinary center focusing on contemporary social issues and public policy.  Its mission is to critically explore alternative ways of understanding and theorizing the relationship between law and society, and simultaneously to reexamine and reframe contemporary debates over existing public policies. Although the Rogers Program does not limit its inquiry to specific topics, the Program generally focuses on a set of issues including punishment and issues of social control, youth studies, indigenous rights and international institutions, political violence and conflict resolution, environmental issues and issues of multiculturalism, nationalism and democratic theory.

Arid Lands Resource Sciences

The program is interdisciplinary and provides an academic environment in which to examine the ecological, economic, and social factors which influence the sustainable use of arid and semiarid lands. It is structured around four general areas of study, or tracks:  Developmental studies focus on determining strategies for resource development and management that can be sustained locally without external support.  Economic Botany studies focus on the development of natural products with potential economic uses for sustainable agriculture in arid and semi-arid lands.  Ethnoecological studies focus on the interaction between people and their physical and biological environment. Physical studies focus on the interaction of two or more of the physical elements of the environment. Climate is usually one of those elements.

Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA)

As the Bureau states at its website, in these times of increased globalization and ethnic diversity, anthropology assumes a new relevance and a social responsibility that extend far beyond academic walls.  BARA, as a research unit, applies social science knowledge to an enhanced understanding of real-world problems. Its diverse range of research activities--in both domestic and international contexts--addresses critical human issues dealing with change and development, power and poverty, gender and ethnicity, growth and learning, social justice and equity, and environmental change and sustainability. At the heart of BARA's approach lies a commitment to community participation, empirical fieldwork, and innovative research methods.  BARA emphasizes six program areas: (a) Agricultural Development, (b) Livelihood Studies, (c) Anthropology and Education, (d) Environmental Studies, (e) Natural Resource Management, and (f) Native American Cultural Resource Revitalization.

Center for Middle Eastern Studies

The Center’s mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the Middle East through education, scholarship, faculty and student support and community outreach. Its area of interest extends from North Africa through the Fertile Crescent to the Arabian Gulf in the south and Turkey, Iran, and Islamic Central Asia in the north.  The Center has a multifaceted program of K-12 outreach activities, including lectures and travel opportunities.  The cornerstone of the program is an annual accredited four-day Teachers' Workshop for K-12 educators.  Drawing upon the expertise of UA faculty, the the Center's Business Outreach program organizes briefings and workshops for Arizona companies doing business in the Middle East. Similarly, the Center organizes lectures and briefings for journalists and for federal, state, and local government officials.

Center for Latin American Studies

The Latin American Studies Center possesses particular strengths in Mexico, Brazil, Environmental Studies, Border Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Women’s Studies.  The Center for Latin American studies has organized its curriculum resources for educators at K-12.  Each category contains a variety of information, activities, lessons and ideas that can be used directly or adapted to teach about Latin America.
