Data
on Anthropologically Connected
The cognate MA program is a specialized degree program for students who seek specialized training in a relatively narrow area of anthropology, and do not intend to pursue a PhD in the field. Typically, the Cognate MA is chosen by professionals in other areas who want or might need a graduate degree in anthropology, and by students who might need only an MA degree. Cognate MA students have included nurses, museum personnel, archaeologists specializing in Cultural Resource Management, and sociolinguists. The Department of Anthropology has chosen to concentrate resources and research on a number of thematic topics. Prominent among these are: Globalization and Development (focusing on the interactions between local societies and the global economy, emphasizing the processes of global flows of people, commodities, and capital) and Biological Diversity and Health (the relationship of human biology and health to the environment, construed broadly to include the social environment, the built environment and the physical environment). With the rapid development of advances in modern biology, and because of the precision of the science, courts are apportioning greater weight to physical DNA evidence while becoming less reliant on eyewitness accounts and onfessions. This has created a critical need for personnel with specialized training in the field of forensic molecular biology and the new M.S. degree is designed to fulfill this need. Centers, Institutes, Schools and Museums with Anthropology Faculty that Emphasize Public Outreach The mission
of the Center is to contribute to the elimination of minority
health disparities by (1) bringing faculty research expertise
to bear on the problem, Center for Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies Among the Center's main functions are: 1) to provide the necessary infrastructure for generating linkages and collaborative agreements with other relevant public and private institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean and the United States, with the goal of promoting research, training and educational exchanges of faculty, students, and resources; 2) to disseminate information through newsletters and directories and make reseach information more widely available to scholars, educators, the business community and other organizations; 3) to provide technical and consultant resources in specialized areas to public and private institutions in the U.S. and abroad; and 4) to encourage greater communication and cooperation among Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. communities, and a greater appreciation of Latino multicultural diversity within U.S. society. Center for Social and Demographic Analysis The Center was established in 1981 with the objective of providing demographic information and expertise to the wider academic community and the general public. As part of the Centers for Disease Control's Prevention Research Centers Program, for example, the Prevention Research Center has been created to promote community-based interventions to prevent chronic disease by emphasizing the importance of community-based characteristics affecting the health of residents. Department
of Epidemiology, The graduate programs in Epidemiology are designed to develop skills and capability in the practice and teaching of this discipline to address the public health problems and priorities of New York State. The major goal of the programs is to provide understanding of the theory, methods and knowledge of the science of epidemiology for students who plan to be employed in multiple settings, including universities, governmental agencies, health care facilities and private industry.
