How These Data Were Collected
from the LexisNexis Database

While there are hundreds of databases today, there are three major database that, because they are focused on public media, seemed appropriate for collecting the data presented in this project: LexisNexis, Ebsco, and Infotrac. I chose LexisNexis because it (1) seemed less inclusive of academic publications and (2) was relatively easy to use. That said, readers should note certain academic journals in the field of women’s studies seem to be included – such as the Women’s Review of Books, Feminist Studies, and Camera Obscura. None of the above databases is total focused on the broader public and completely avoids academic publications. Selecting one over another in respect to emphasizing the public -- i.e. non-academic -- publications was a matter of degree. Moreover, none of the databases cover all of the public publications available. For reasons relating to cost, databases that include Newsweek, for example, do not necessarily include Time (and vice-versa). The full list of publications utilized in the data presented here – that is, the publications of the LexisNexis Academic database – are listed on LexisNexis under SOURCE LIST.

A perusal of the source list for the two categories used here – General News (Major Papers) and General News (Magazines and Journals) – conveys the impression that the range of publications surveyed is fairly extensive. LexisNexis Academic NEWS includes:

Full-text of more than 350 newspapers from the U.S. and around the world, many same day of publication, plus the most extensive archives available anywhere of Financial Times (dating back to 1982), The New York Times (dating back to 1980) and The Washington Post (dating back to 1977)
More than 400 magazines and journals and over 600 newsletters, including: American Demographics, American Journalism Review, Business Week, The Economist, Ebony, Kirkus Reviews, New Republic, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and Variety

But readers should recognize no database is perfect. Given the number of faculty that had to be surveyed (over a thousand) and each faculty member was being surveyed in two categories, ease of use was also an important criteria. (Please note that for reasons that presently remain unclear to me the source list provided by LexisNexis - see below - does not include various journals that come up in citation searches.)

In early data searches I included television appearances as well. But an examination of the material, with and without, television transcripts (listed under LexisNexis as News Transcripts [All Transcripts]) did not seem to noticeably affect the number of faculty listed with five or more citations in Major National/International Printed Media. An anthropologist who had a large number of print citations usually had television citations and vice-versa. If readers try searching television transcripts in the LexisNexis database themselves, they will see that it adds considerable time, effort, and possibilities for mistakes to the data collection process. (After spending over 100 hours searching for television citations as well as the print citations included and realizing the data needed to be updated annually, I felt keeping television citations as a category was not really worth the effort.)

How were the data collected? Readers should note it took over two years to settle on a stable system. At first, I collected the data myself. That proved exhausting (as readers will see if they try the process themselves). I then had two undergraduates – Tabitha Corn and Mishalla Spearing – update my work at different times during 2004-2005 because the data, obviously, had to be kept up to date. When I came to the data presented here – COLLECTED DURING JANUARY 2006 – I felt uneasy regarding the possibility for mistakes in updating them and, as a result, decided to do the whole process again (this time without the television media). Two students – Kate Taladay and Amber Yale – separately did the collection of these raw data. (The process involved is described below.) In the great majority of cases, they both collected the same number of citations for each faculty member. But in a few cases their results disagreed. On such occasions I chose the data set with the greater number of citations. The synthesized result of Ms. Taladay’s and Ms. Yale’s data are presented on the Raw Data page. This page is accessible by by clicking on a hotlink on the Edited Data page.

There is art as well as science in examining the raw data. Since an anthropologist might have the same name as someone else – there are a host of Tom Jones, for example, in the data base – even when one narrows the search by adding anthropologist and the individual’s university, a disciplinary background is critical for sorting through the raw data to select correct versus false citations. I sorted through all the raw data myself. Since some of the raw data were incomplete and/or ambiguous, I have made them available readers so they, too, can examine theml.

The specific steps involved in collecting citations from the LexisNexis Academic database were as follows: On opening the database base (1) choose the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH (since it is more complete than Quick News Search), (2) next choose GENERAL NEWS and then the subcategory MAJOR PAPERS. (2a) If you wish, you can click on the SOURCE LIST to see the publications being searched. (3) Under search terms, (3a) type in the initial space, the person’s name being searched (as presented on the list of full-time faculty), (3b) type, in the second space, anthropologist, and (3c) type in the third space the person’s school. (In the case of large university systems – such as the California system – University of California at Riverside or Berkeley was changed to Riverside and Berkeley respectively. Emory University or University of Colorado were listed by their full names. There was no shortening of the name. Though the University of Colorado is technically the University of Colorado at Boulder, the location was dropped since it might restrict the number of citations produced.). IMPORTANT NOTE: To the left of the 3b -- anthropologist type in AND. To the left of the 3c--individual's school type in OR. It should read AND anthropologist OR name of school. (4) All three of the narrowing choices specified under (3) were searched under FULL TEXT. (5) The date range was ALL AVAILABLE DATES. (6) Clicking on the SEARCH tab at the bottom of the page produced the results for this specific search. However, this information was too limited to decide if indeed the citation referred to the anthropologist in question. (In a full-text search, anthropologist and the individual’s school might NOT occur in association with the individual in question and not be referencing the desired faculty member.) (7) To gather more detailed information, the PRINT tab was pressed. (8) On the ensuing web page, EXPANDED LIST under Format of Results was selected. (9) DISPLAY CITATIONS was clicked. The data listed under expanded citation constituted the raw data that was used for creating the final list of citations associated with each faculty member.

In addition to the above process, at step (2) we choose, instead of major papers, MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS and repeated the remaining steps referred to above. These latter data provide citations for an individual in the general media’s magazines and journals. (2a) Readers can, again , click on SOURCE LIST to see the journals and magazines being searched.

The positive part of this process is that readers can duplicate the exact steps the students and I took in collecting the data and decide whether mistakes were made and/or additional citations might be added. I have tried to make the data collection process as transparent as possible. If you, as a reader, find errors, please forward me the information needed for me to check the results (as well as a phone number that I can call for clarification) and, if confirmed, I will gladly make the appropriate change.

One possible source of error is that some anthropologists use their middle names in publications. Unsure whether Tom Jones or Tom Jefferson Jones would produce the larger number of relevant citations, we leaned toward the shorter name. If it seemed particularly unclear, we tried searching under both names and indicated this on the edited data and raw data web pages. Readers who wish to search the LexisNexis Academic database using their middle names can do so and, if the results are noticeably different, forward the additional citations on to me. I will be glad to make the appropriate changes.
