1. Geralda:   In addition to being a visually arresting portrait— Gilles Peress asked this young man and his sister if he could take their picture by flashlight— there is a long and sad history to go with it. This young man is carrying his teenage sister, Geralda, who was diagnosed a few minutes earlier with tuberculosis. She could not have been heavy to carry in any physical sense, but her brother would shortly thereafter bring another sibling, also with tuberculosis, to our hospital. I had treated their mother three years previously. So this young man was the only healthy member of a family beat up by rural Haiti.
