Overview of the Project

The Anthropology Journals Project involves publishing on www.publicanthropology.org summaries of all the articles printed in the discipline’s leading journals. These summaries are produced by undergraduate and graduate students throughout Canada and the United States. For every article, there are two distinct summaries written by two different students at two different institutions so readers gain a "bifocal" view of that article’s themes.

The Project possesses three aims: (1) make important information in leading anthropology journals available to a world-wide audience, (2) reinforce analytical skills that undergraduate and graduate students in anthropology need, and (3) allow students to participate in a public anthropology initiative that, for many, will involve their first publications.

The "target" audiences for these summaries are: (a) anthropologists interested in the writings of fellow anthropologists through time and (b) people outside the discipline - such as journalists and general readers - who are curious as to how anthropological writings entwine with their own interests. Since the summaries will be searchable, any one can read what has been written on a particular topic over the history of the discipline.

Teachers concerned about the pedagogical value of the project should read the teacher’s testimonials (click here). They are mostly rave reviews. One can also look at what students have, to date, produced (see below).

Teachers and their classes may choose to participate in one of two ways:

(1) Teachers may have their classes complete summaries for one or more years of Current Anthropology. Please note, only years, not issues, will be assigned to a school. Teacher’s interested should visit their libraries, peruse various years of CA, and choose the years that best coincide with the concerns and directions of their courses. Current Anthropology offers a full range of articles, plus of course the CA Commentaries.  Please click here to see which schools have already chosen which years of CA.

(2) Teachers may also have their classes complete summaries for one or more years of Human Organization. Please note again only years, not issues, will be assigned to a school. Teachers interested in this option should visit their libraries, peruse through various years, and choose the years that best coincide with the concerns and directions of their courses. Human Organization focuses on applied anthropology but offers more time-depth than Current Anthropology. Volume one starts in 1941. Please click here to see which schools have already chosen which years of Human Organization.
